Primary Talk Idea

So my son has to give a talk on Sunday, his very first talk. I looked around trying to find something that went along with the theme for this week, but couldn't really find anything. I found some, but they were too long (he's only 4, there's no way he would stand up there and give a long talk). :)
So, I came up with this little poem. I am going to find some pictures to go along with it, so he can have pictures to show for his talk.
I just wanted to share this in case some of you were ever in the same predicament.
-You could also use this as a handout for Sharing Time.

By: Sheena Perron

He fed the 5,000 with some fish & bread.
He healed the sick,
He calmed the sea,
He even raised the dead.

He didn’t care if others
Were sick or poor or lame.
He called to them and blessed them
He loved each one the same.

Now everyday I’m here on Earth,
I have a choice to make.
Am I going to follow Christ?
Or choose another way?

I want to be like Jesus,
It’s plain & simple.
So I will try to do my best
And follow His example.

Hope you like it. Click Here for the printable version. Thanks!!

1st Week of August Sharing Time Idea: Jesus Christ is a God of Miracles

Here is my idea for the 1st week of August:

I decided it would be really neat if you had some adults come in and act like some of the people that Jesus performed miracles for. I thought that the children would enjoy it and it would be very spiritual.
You will need to choose 3-5 stories for this sharing time and find the corresponding Gospel Art Kit Pictures. Post the pictures onto a poster-board, chalk board or a bulletin board.
For your Sharing Time, you will have each person come in one at a time and share their story with the children (the amount of stories depends on how long each on is). After the person has shared their story they will choose one of the children to come up and choose which GAK picture goes with the story they just shared.
After all the guests have come in and shared their story you will ask them a few questions about miracles.

And that's it...pretty simple, but I think it will be great.

Go for the Gold!! A Primary Quarterly Activity

I meant to post this idea at the beginning of summer, but completely forgot. Maybe it's because we haven't had much of a summer here in Hailey. It's just started warming up....sad, huh? I have really been enjoying the summer weather though, I hope all of you have too.

Today I am going to share a great summer Quarterly Activity with you. We actually did this last year for one of our activities and it was alot of fun.

We decided to name the activity:

We had four teams: Red Team, Blue Team, Green Team, and an Orange Team. At the beginning of the activity the teachers performed a skit for the children. The skit had to do with good sportsmanship (that was kind of the theme for the activity, being a good sport).
After the skit we began our Water Olympics. Our 4 events were:

Sponge Pass
Water Bomb Pass
Water Balloon Launcher
Water Kickball

We had the Red & Blue Team go to one of the games and the Green and Orange to the other. We gave each game a certain amount of time and at the end of that time we blew a whistle. When the whistle was blown they went to the next game. The children had so much fun and at the end of the olympics we had pizza and an award ceremony. We made medals for each of the children. We decided to make a medal that a child would enjoy. And what do they love....treats!! So, I got some candy, gold cellophane, and some ribbon and made some medals.

Here is how I made them:
First decide on a treat that you would like to use as the medal. We used a candy called "Cup of Gold'. I have never heard of these before, but our Primary President knew what they were and thought they would be perfect. You could also use Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (the big, individually wrapped ones), Cookies, anything that has a round shape to it.

For this example I used Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

I taped the edges down to give it more of a round shape. Then cut a square piece of cellophane and place your treat in the middle of the cellophane. Then fold the bottom of the cellophane up over the Reese's.

Flip it over and grab one side of the cellophane and fold it to the middle. Repeat with the other side.

Then do that again. It should look like this. Tape it so that it stays in place. Then get some ribbon (the kind you can curl) and tie it around the top. (sorry forgot to take a picture of this step.) I used gold curly ribon to go along with the gold cellophane.

Next we will attach the strap. When I made these for the activity I used some red, white& blue ribbon, it was really cute. But you can also use the curly ribbon, that's what I used for today's example.
Cut a long strip of your ribbon, make sure it will be big enough to go over the children's head, then attach it to the back of the treat. I used tape and they held up fine.
I figured the children would probably eat them righ away, so they really didn't need to stay together too long.

Here is the finished product.

The awards that we handed our were for:
Best Sportsmanship
Best Team Spirit
Best Listeners
Over-all Winners
If you don't like seeing the "Reese's" showing through the cellophane, you could cut out circles (from paper) and type/write 'Best Sportsmanship', 'Best Team Spirit', 'Over-all Winner', etc. then attach it to the front of your treat. When you hand out your medals, the children will be able to see what they were awarded.

The children loved the water games, the pizza, and the medals. So, if you're looking for a fun Summer activity here's an idea. I have included Team List Sheets, Score Sheets, and instructions for this activity.

This could also be used for Young Men/Young Women.

3rd & 4th Week Sharing Time Idea: Jesus Christ's Example Teaches me How to Live

I have been trying to post my idea for the 3rd & 4th week for a few days now. But I wanted to finish mine so I could take a picture and show all of you. So, finally here is my Sharing Time idea for the 3rd & 4th week of July.

For this week I thought it would be fun to play some kind of board game. As I was thinking about it, I thought of the game 'Life'. Since the theme is about how Jesus Christ's example can teach us how to live our life. So, I looked around a little bit and finally came up with this.

Here is a picture of my game board.

So, at the beginning you can show the children the picture of Earth and tell them that right now we are living on the Earth. But we are on a journey trying to get back to our Heavenly Father. Then you can go on to tell them that today we are going to learn about Jesus and the things that He did while on the earth. Tell them that if we learn about Him and follow His example we will be able to make it back to our Heavenly Father.

It's just a normal board game nothing too difficult. Just to tell you a little bit about it...
There are different squares that the children can land on during the game. The categories are:

Sing: when landed on this square they will have to sing a primary song
Scripture Search: When they land on this square they will be given a scripture reference and a question that they must answer.
Trying to be like Jesus: When they land on this square you will show them the GAK picture and read the story to them. Then you will ask them the question on the card that they will need to answer.
What would you do?: When they land on these you will read a short scenario to them, then they will have to answer the question.
There are also squares that have good/bad scenarios that will tell them to move forward so many spaces or move back so many spaces.

I think the questions are easy enough for Jr. Primary (with help from teachers). But you can always change some to fit the needs of your Primary. I have included everything you need to make your game board (except the poster-board of course). I printed the 'Trying to be like Jesus' and 'Scripture search' cards on different colored cardstock (blue & green). This way I will know which is which whenever a child lands on that square.
View my document and see what you think. I think the children will have alot of fun. If you don't want to make the game board, you could also do a life-size game board, that would be really fun.
And please let me know if you have any questions or problems or any other ideas!

Have a great weekend!!

Book of Mormon Book Worms

At our 'Book of Mormon Time Travelers' Quarterly activity, we gave the children a Book of Mormon Challenge. The children were asked to read the Book of Mormon for 30 days.
We gave each child a calendar that they could mark off every time they read. We told them that if they read for 30 days, they would get a special treat.

Well, we promised them a special treat, but we couldn't think of anything. At one of our presidency meetings we were discussing the treat that we would be giving to each child that read the Book of Mormon. The 1st counselor had the idea of giving them a book mark. Then the idea hit me....yeah, they can be Book of Mormon book worms!! We thought of making our own book marks that had a worm on it, but we decided to just buy some. We decided to give them a book mark and a bag of gummy worms with a little note attached that said, 'I'm a Book of Mormon book worm!'

I got some cute scrapbooking paper (I saw some dirt paper that I wish I would have used). I used red cardstock to print the note onto. And then I found some cute little worms (from Microsoft Word) to cut out and attach to the note.

I found some long skinny cellaphane bags (I had some extras to use for my Father's Day Tie treats) and filled them with gummy worms and a book mark.

I punched a hole in the top corner of the note and attached it to the bag of worms with some green curly ribbon.
The children that received this special treat loved it.
Another idea you could do: make a cute book mark that says 'I'm a Book of Mormon book worm!' Give that to the children along with a dirt & worms cupcake: Chocolate cupcake with frosting, crushed oreos (dirt), and gummy worms.

2nd Week Sharing Time Idea for July: Jesus Christ went about doing good.

Here is my idea for the second week of July. I did a Sharing Time really similar to this last year and it went really well. This is alot like the idea that is given in the outline, but it has some little changes to it.

You will have several GAK pictures either posted around the room or on a bulletin/chalk board. For each picture you will have some kind of object that goes with that picture. On each object is a scripture reference. You can either split the primary into groups and give each group an object and scripture reference to read and match to one of the pictures. Or you can choose one child at a time to come up and choose an object. Then read the scripture that goes with the object aloud. Have the child choose which picture it goes with. Once they have chosen the correct GAK picture you can ask questions and discuss the story a little more.

That is all I have for that idea, but I hope you like it.
I want to wish all of you a happy and safe 4th of July!!
